You are all ready to buy a home and make your home ownership dreams a reality, great! Now what?

Here are some simple steps & tips to consider before beginning your process.

  1. Credit Check — There are many websites, apps, and programs out there for you to check your credit score. Even though the lender will check your credit when they being their process, it still is a good idea to check on your own so you have somewhat of an idea of what to expect.

  2. Budget Plan — It is a great idea to start saving money and possibly even coming up with a budget plan. There are additional costs that will come in to play, once you have decided to move forward on the house of your dreams.

  3. Down Payment Plan — How much money you decide to put down, is a personal choice, however, 20% is the suggested amount. You can always shop around for down payment assistance programs, if necessary. The lender will want to make sure you are financially secure for the down payment & secure for additional costs that will come into play later in the process. (Ex. Closing costs)

  4. Emergency Fund — Be aware of the fact that there are costs that come with home ownership, such as repairing/replacing a broken appliance. You want to have money saved up for an emergencies that may occur once you are moved in.

  5. No Additional Credit — If you are considering becoming a home owner, try to avoid opening any additional credit lines. You don’t want to hurt your credit right before beginning your process.

  6. Lender Shopping — You will need to get pre-approved for a loan by the bank of your choice before you start looking at homes so you are aware of what your loan budget is. You don’t want to fall in love with a home that may or may not be in your price range and/or budget.

  7. Real Estate Agent — Why go through this whole process alone? Having an agent by your side, helping you through the process can make the whole experience much easier.
